Road freight Croatia – Austria: exports and imports, full trucks and mega trailers

We organised more than 500 shipments between Croatia and Austria in the last 12 months, in both directions. Exports go mostly to Upper Austria, Styria and Lower Austria; imports are mainly timber, pellets and building materials, most of them for Zagreb and its surroundings.

Austria in both directions

Our exports are mostly bulky goods such as pipes and fittings, where a 100 m³ mega trailer pays off. The most frequent destinations are Wels and the Linz area, Graz, the Vienna area (Gerasdorf) and Tyrol.

Imports are mainly timber, sawn wood, pellets and building materials from Lower and Upper Austria, loaded around St. Pölten and Enns. More than 8 in 10 of these shipments are unloaded in Zagreb and its surroundings, most of the rest in Slavonia.

On regular lanes we work with carriers who drive them every week, so a return load often covers both directions.

What we organise

From a single pallet to regular weekly trucks.

  • Full truckload (FTL)

A 13.6 m curtainsider for your goods only, with no transhipment. That is almost 9 in 10 of our shipments on this lane.

  • Mega trailer

Up to 3 m internal height and about 100 m³ for light, bulky goods such as pipes, insulation or packaging.

  • Timber, pellets and building materials

Imports of sawn wood, pellets and building materials from Austria, usually as a full curtainsider load.

  • Groupage

For a few pallets: your goods travel in a shared truck and you pay for the space they take.

How a shipment works

One dispatcher from enquiry to confirmed delivery.

  1. Enquiry

Loading and delivery addresses, goods, pallet count or weight, vehicle type if known and the date the goods are ready.

  2. Quote

The dispatcher checks carriers who drive the lane and sends price, vehicle type and timing.

  3. Loading

We agree the loading slot directly with the shipper in Croatia or Austria and send the truck and driver details in advance.

  4. Unloading

We confirm the arrival time and send the signed CMR as proof of delivery.

Most frequent lanes

Places with the most of our shipments in the last 12 months, in both directions.

Typical time from loading to unloading is 1 day, and 8 in 10 shipments arrive within 3 days. Your quote states the exact timing.

  1. Međimurje → Wels and Linz (Upper Austria)
  2. Croatia → Graz (Styria)
  3. Croatia → Vienna area
  4. Croatia → Tyrol and Carinthia
  5. St. Pölten (Lower Austria) → Zagreb
  6. Enns (Upper Austria) → Zagreb and Slavonia

What affects the price

We do not publish a price list, because the price depends on the shipment. These are the main factors:

Austrian truck toll
Austria charges trucks a per-kilometre toll that depends on axles and emission class. It is a large part of the price.
Vehicle type
Mega trailer, standard curtainsider or a smaller vehicle, depending on volume and weight.
Return load
Lanes with regular loads in both directions are cheaper than one-way runs.
Driving bans
Austria bans trucks on weekends and public holidays and restricts night driving, which affects the unloading slot.

Documents

For freight within the EU, this is all you need:

  • CMR consignment note

Issued at loading and travels with the goods. The copy signed at unloading is the proof of delivery.

  • No customs clearance

Croatia and Austria are both in the EU, so goods in free circulation need no customs declaration. The shipper provides the invoice and delivery note.

  • Liability for the goods

Under the CMR Convention, carrier liability is limited to 8.33 SDR per kilogram of gross weight. For higher-value goods we recommend additional cargo insurance.
